Scientific research has shown that cannabis has a potential treatment for various neurological conditions such as epilepsy and seizures. The word marijuana refers to the leaves of the cannabis plant. The scientists have tested the cannabis plant and proofed that the plant has a variety of medicinal uses. Cannabinoids (CBD) are substances in cannabis that act on cannabinoid receptors cells in the body. Consequently, CBD causes some effects. Two major ingredients are Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which causes the psychoactive effects of” getting high” and the Cannabidiol or CBD, which result to no psychoactive effects but shows some positive effects on certain body systems and may potentially affect seizures.
Seizures refer to the alteration in the brains electrical activity. This alteration may result to noticeable symptoms and the same time it can cause unnoticeable signs. Some of the symptoms of a seizure include violent shaking and loss of control especially when standing. However, a mild seizure may be a sign of an illness. Therefore, it should be recognized as early as possible and an immediate action is taken. This is because some types of seizures can cause injury and hence seek treatment for the seizure is very important.

Types of seizure

There are various types of seizures. These include nonepileptic seizures, partial seizures, and generalized seizures. Non-epileptic seizure is coming from an injury such a blow on the head or an illness. A patient suffering from this type of seizure should seek treatment from a qualified doctor or any medical practitioner Secondly, the partial seizure occurs when one has epilepsy. It is worth noting that epilepsy is a condition that results in repeated seizures. A partial seizure affects only one side the brain hence it affects only one side of the body. Lastly, a generalized seizure occurs on both sides of the brain and it affects both sides of the body. An example of generalized seizures includes grand mal and a tonic-clonic seizure, which occurs when one, have epilepsy.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a seizure can occur before the seizure takes place and the time that seizure is in progress. An example of symptoms before seizure takes place includes a headache,  an out of body sensation, sudden feeling of fear or anxiousness, a feeling of being sick to the stomach, dizziness, a change in vision, and a jerky movement of the arms and legs that may cause one to drop things. Symptoms, when the seizure is in progress, includes having sudden mood changes, losing control of bladder or bowel function, having a strange taste in the mouth, having uncontrollable muscle spasms, losing consciousness, clenching teeth, and making unusual noises.

Causes of seizure

Seizures result from various health problems or anything, which affects the body, and disturb the brain. An example of the causes includes alcohol withdrawal, drug abuse, choking, electric shock, epilepsy, fever, head trauma, a brain injury, a brain infection, kidney or liver failure, and stroke. Seizures may be inherent and therefore one should report a family with a history of seizures for an action to be taken to treat the condition.

Treatment

Scientific research has shown that Marijuana or cannabis has a potential treatment for various neurological conditions such as epilepsy and seizures.

Side effects of cannabis

The use of cannabis to treat seizures has a number of effects depending on the way of ingestion prescribed by the doctor. For instance, if smoked, it may cause some risks related to smoking marijuana. The side effects of the preparations used in the treatment of seizures have not been well documented in the anecdotal reports of varying doses and strains have been used.  However, various effects of the use of CBD to treat seizure have been reported. These include an increase in appetite and memory problems. Most of the side effects are mild or moderate and go away with time. However, the most serious possible side effect is status epilepticus, which occurs when one has long or repeated seizures. The side effects vary from one person to another due to variation in people’s immunity and genetic makeup. From the trials of CBD, effects in the treatment of seizures in people with Lennox Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome side effects such as tiredness, diarrhoea and upset stomach feeling have been reported.

The effects of the use of CBD in the treatment of seizures differ among people and depend on the type of seizure. The most common effect of CBD treatment for seizures includes tiredness, diarrhoea, upset stomach and sleepiness. Therefore, it is advisable for doctors to take care before administering CBD treatment to people suffering from a seizure. The doctors should examine and identify the patient’s type of seizure before proceeding to treatment. This is because there are laws set to govern the medical CBD and when the doctor violates those laws, he or she might be imprisoned. The safest treatments of seizure due to epilepsy are medications, surgery to correct brain abnormalities, nerve stimulation and a special diet. Patient under cannabis should be closely monitored by the doctor.
